Ravel en tijdgenoten Maurice Ravel werd exact 150 jaar geleden geboren, in 1875. Hij cultiveerde een stijl die het klassieke met het eigentijdse combineerde, maar achter het classicistisch oppervlak van deze muziek gaat veel melancholie en sensualiteit schuil.
